Dr. Akbar’s influence extends beyond academia. In 1987, he was elected president of the National Association of Black Psychologists, where he also served on the Board of Directors. A Life Member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Dr. Akbar's civic contributions are extensive and widely respected.
Dr. Na’im Akbar is a pioneering scholar and author whose work has significantly shaped the field of African-American psychology. His groundbreaking research and thought leadership have earned him numerous accolades, including the Distinguished Psychologist Award from the National Association of Black Psychologists, and Honorary Doctorates of Humane Letters from both Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and Lincoln University. Several U.S. cities have honored him with commemorative days, and he holds the distinguished title of Development Chief in Ghana, West Africa.
Dr. Akbar is internationally recognized for his insightful and transformative writings, particularly his books New Visions for Black Men and Breaking the Chains of Psychological Slavery. He has shared his expertise on platforms such as *The Oprah Winfrey Show*, *Tavis Smiley’s Annual State of Black America*, and the *Geraldo Show*, among others. His contributions have been featured in major publications, including *The Washington Post* and *Essence Magazine*, and he has delivered lectures on five continents, earning his place as one of the most respected thinkers and orators of our time.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Akbar cherishes his role as the father of three accomplished children and the grandfather of five grandchildren.
A graduate of the University of Michigan, Dr. Akbar earned his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in psychology. His academic career included positions as chair of the Psychology Department at Morehouse College and faculty member at Norfolk State University. After a 28-year tenure as a psychology professor at Florida State University, he retired in 2008 to focus on his role as President of his consulting and publishing firm, Mind Productions & Associates.
